If you’ve ever wondered how to grow herbs or even herbs grown from the inside out, the answer is a simple one: just go to the supermarket.
According to the National Association of Home Improvement Stores (NAHIS), the average American will spend $3,000 a year on herbs and $2,300 on botanical products, which means that the average person spends around $2.75 a pound on herbs.
“For people who don’t have a lot of time or don’t want to buy herbs, it’s actually really cheap,” said NAHIS spokesperson, Mary Beth Clark.
According a 2012 study conducted by the National Center for Home Economics, the average cost per pound of herbs in the U.S. was $0.70 per pound.
This price differential means that consumers can save money on a lot more than herbs.
According to Clark, most herb products are packaged as organic, but that’s not necessarily the case.
For example, most organic herb products can cost $4.00 a pound.
That price difference could also be due to the fact that organic herbs are often grown for their flavor, smell, and taste, according to Clark.
So if you’re buying organic herbs for a special occasion, you could save some money on your herb purchases.
“When you go to a pharmacy and they have all the herbs that are really good, they’ll often go out and buy some really good herbs and they’ll throw those in the cart,” Clark said.
According Clark, home improvement stores are also the best place to get a good deal on herbs for home improvement projects, because home improvement is a big industry, and home improvement supplies are often very affordable.
“Home improvement is really big in the marketplace and they don’t sell the same stuff over and over,” Clark added.
That’s because there are often many different types of home improvement products available.
“They all have different price tags and they all have a different quality and a different texture and a whole range of different things,” Clark explained.
If you’re a home improvement junkie, Clark says you can still buy herbs for your home, but it’s not always a good idea.
“It can actually be cheaper to buy a little bit of weed than a whole bunch of herbs,” Clark pointed out.
“If you have the time and the inclination, you can grow some really really good weed,” she added.
“I think you can make a lot out of it.”
In addition to the cost savings, Clark also said there are some great home improvement techniques to get started with growing herbs.
“If you do a little research, you’ll learn about the different types,” Clark advised.
“Then you can just try some of those and then you can see if you like them or not.”
